Are they cursed as well as Chosen?
Ishtaer is a mystery. A blind slave, beaten and broken by her sadistic mistress, with no memory of a time before her enslavement.
Kael Vapensigsson is one of the elite Chosen – a warlord whose strength comes from the gods themselves. But despite all his power and prestige, he is plagued by a prophecy that threatens to destroy everything he loves. When Kael summons Ishtaer to his room and discovers the marks of the Chosen on her body, including the revered mark of the Warrior, both warlord and slave seem to have met their match.
But as their lives become increasingly entangled and endangered, Ishtaer is forced to test whether the Chosen ever have the ability to choose their own fate.

Impossible Things Choc Lit edition by Kate Johnson Romance eBooks

I liked the character Ishtaer. She did some neat things. She starts off starved, beaten, nearly dead. She is rescued from slavery and turns into a powerful force. I liked the parts where she dealt with a bully and different enemies. I liked the character Kael and his issues. There is a little romance mostly at the end. But romance is not the main focus. It’s more about Ishtaer’s development, changes, actions, and her friends.

A few times my mind wandered during descriptive parts. But overall I’m glad I read it. The ending romantic part was rushed. I would have liked more on that.

There is rape and torture of adults and children, but it’s referred to after the fact - if that matters.

SETTING:
The ideas are not new, but good. A minority of humans are gifted with mystical and magical powers: healers, psychic seers, warriors, and fleet-of-feet messengers. Time and place are not defined, but it makes me think of a European setting in the days of Vikings with swords and chain mail.

EBOOK FORMATTING PROBLEM:
There needs to be a line, symbol, or extra space between scene changes. You think the next sentence is a continuation of the current conversation until a few sentences later you realize it's another scene in another place. It’s jarring and takes you out of the story when you realize this.

DATA:
Narrative mode: 3rd person. Kindle count length: 5,842 (304 pages). Swearing language: moderate. Sexual language: none. Number of sex scenes: one pleasant sex scene and a brutal gang rape. Setting: unknown. Copyright: 2014. Genre: fantasy romance.

Impossible Things Choc Lit edition by Kate Johnson Romance eBooks Reviews

This was such a phenomenal story. I usually don't read Choc Lit or even Independent authors, but this book blew me out of the water. It wasn't perfect, the beginning starts off leaving the reader a bit confused and some of the dialog can be confusing as well, but the actual story? Beautiful. The characters were real and heartbreaking and beautiful. The romance was perfect, with a slow burn and built in companionship, trust, and friendship. The only complain I have is that there is no sequel!
Hats off to the author. It was beautifully written! It's probably the best, new book I have read in awhile. The names are a little difficult, but if you are a fan of Tamora Pierce or Kristen Cashore then you'll enjoy this. There is some abuse and mild intimacy, so not exactly the same category as the other authors, but nothing so racy to bump it up to Adults Only.

The story starts with Kael, Warlord of Krull, and Ishtaer, a emancipated and abused slave whose been ordered to please him. He is portrayed as heartless and borderline evil even while rescuing her for her possible gifts. In this world like in the Graceling, certain people have abilities. These abilities are visualized in the types of marking they receive. This is a love story in that there is no instant romance, Kael is slowly unveiled to be a complicated and love man who protects what is his and uses his reputation as a shield for his lands and family. Ishtaer works to overcome her past and train her gifts. The romance between the two builds and has its hiccups. The author did rush the very end just a bit. Or rather ended it a little to soon, I would have like to have seen more interaction with Ishtaer's family.

All around this is a book I will read over again and will bug the author for more! More Kael and Ishtaer......maybe another storyline that touches on these two but with all new characters?! Just more! Great job!
4 1/2 Stars. This is a great book that shows astounding character development and growth for both characters, however I wish their was a touch more romance between the two main characters, but perhaps both of them needed to grow in different ways to be able to get there.
I saw some friends talking about this on Twitter, and it sparked my interest. Warlord Hero, Healer Heroine, I am SOLD. I am so glad I took the chance. Once I started, I could not put this book down. I devoured it! There is magic, war, romance, groveling... I ate it all up.
The world building was phenomenal and I really feel like the author is on to something, as another reviewer said. I would love to see more books set in this world!
I really like Kate Johnson's writing. So far, I've read two of her books and they are so different in genre yet equally brilliant. It's also really good to just read a single self contained book rather then yet another series.
Impossible Things is a great fantasy romance. It's gritty, at times even tortured. The heroine has certainly been put through hell. If I had anything slightly negative to say, it's that she was a tad too awesome. But I loved that it didn't come easy to her. That she had totally earnt that awesomeness the hard way.
The hero was pretty awesome himself though not quite as vivid as the heroine. They worked really well as a couple, however and I trully enjoyed the slow pace of their relationship and the stages of their love. It made it real and increadibly intense once they finally came together at last.
I admit this book made me cry.
I was emotionally invested and couldn't put it down until I finished it in the early hours of the morning (getting 3.5 hours of sleep as the result - totally worth it!)
I can't recommend this book enough to all lovers of wonderfully written fantasy with a beautiful love story.
Kate Johnson is on my automatic buy list from now on.
