What started out as an ordinary day for Soundkeeper Gale Pickens takes a dreadful turn when she stops a barge that is polluting the pristine waters off the coast of Charleston. Beaten and left for dead, one of the polluters kidnaps her and she cannot bear to think about her captor’s intentions. Hall McCormick, a reluctant Refuge Enforcement Officer, is learning the ropes in his new job, which he hopes is only temporary while he waits for the marine biologist job he really wants. He is sad that the beautiful young environmentalist he dated briefly has mysteriously disappeared. While pursuing poachers and keeping the shoreline safe for all animals, he finds kills of marine life, due to someone dumping toxic chemicals into Port Royal Sound. After Gale’s boat is found deserted and drifting to sea, will anyone keep searching for her? Will the criminal polluters be caught in time to save Gale’s life? Will Hall learn to appreciate his job as much as being a scientist? As he races against time, Hall needs to find Gale’s would-be killer before it’s too late. Soundkeeper is a taut new thriller in the vein of C.J. Box and Nevada Barr. Filled with accurate details of the fascinating world of the South Carolina coast, this is a perfect mystery for a day at the beach.

Soundkeeper Hall McCormick Thriller Volume 1 Michael Hervey 9780615625560 Books

I have to wonder whether this book was categorized correctly as a thriller. While it does have some suspenseful moment regarding Gales' abduction, most of the story pertaining to Hall McCormick reads more like a job description. Here is a sample of the writing style "Hall's job was to patrol the 4,053-acre National Wildlife Refuge and enforce federal fisheries regulations, assist the coast Guard with search and rescue missions, oversee controlled deer hunts, and catch offenders who committed violations." Several of his tasks included checking fishing nets, helping to save a dolphin, building an osprey platform, picking up a stray dog, examining a fish kill site, etc. I had been reading 2-3 chapters an evening and completed a third of the book (16 chapters) before arriving at the conclusion that I am not really enjoying this book because it must not be meant for me. If you enjoy real-life dialogue/boating situations along the Carolina coastline then this book might be for you. As for me, having downloaded a thousand books the past 6 months I believe I can afford to catch and release this one and move on to something else I will hopefully enjoy more. I'd give it 2.5 stars rounded up given my agreement with other reviewers as to the superb descriptions of the surrounding environment in that region of the USA.

Soundkeeper Hall McCormick Thriller Volume 1 Michael Hervey 9780615625560 Books Reviews

This book reminded me of the "Woods Cop" series by author Heywood, except on the Carolina coast instead of Michigan's UP. I liked the story and as a Forest Protection Officer, I could relate to a lot of the refuge officer's trials and dilemmas. Hervey seemed very knowledgeable in that respect and the location, weather, etc were visually believable. Not much character development except for the protagonist, but that was okay. The typos, sentence structure, tense shifts, and grammar errors were very distracting. In fact, if not for the errors in delivery, I would have gladly given it 4 stars.
I enjoyed this book immensely! It was one of those page turners that kept me up late at night. The quick pace, frequent plots twists, and short chapters (or at least they seemed short) kept me wanting for more, like hiking on a winding trail and wanting to see what is around the next bend. Having boated some of the area where this story takes place, around Hilton Head, SC, the story had relevance to my own boating experience. The story casts light on the dedicated people who struggle to maintain a clean and safe environment in our waterways, for people and for the wildlife. This is a perfect novel to read on the beach this summer... or any other time you want to want to read a great book! As others have stated, I look forward to Mr. Hervey's next novel.
I love stories about the outdoors and water. The descriptions in this novel are lovely and the characters are varied. It is about a marine officer and an ecologist coming up against crooks bent on their development at the expense of the environment and marine life. Romance is included also.
This book is a page turner, due to the fact that it is about a region that I'm familiar with. One who works in law enforcement has a bulk of responsibilities, including being part servant and part politician. As a fireman for the past 16 years and working in the environmental cleanup service before that, I can actually relate to the profession. Public service is a calling first and second foremost a career. South Carolina is one of the most beautiful states in the nation and it needs protectors, all over the state. The lowcountry is a region of the state that's below sea level and has plenty of inland islands, creeks, rivers, marsh, swaps, and forests. Even though this book is fictional it's not far from being true. Anyone who likes thrillers should add this book to their collection. Soundkeeper deserves a five star rating on any list
Michael Hervey's "Soundkeeper" tells about the lives of those who protect the marine environment. Without their selfless dedication many habitats would be ruined. I know a Creekkeeper who has protected the watershed and creek near my home. Some of the threats are purposely created as in Soundkeeper, but many are the result of progress. Without the dedication of the Creekkeepers, Riverkeepers, Soundkeepers, and others, our watersheds and oceans and wetlands would be ruined.

Thank you, Michael Hervey, for an informative and interesting story. I enjoyed reading it very much. And you are correct, a professional copyediter is most important. It was nice reading a book without grammar and spelling mistakes detracting from the experience of reading the story.
I received this book free via Pixel of Ink for my kindle Paperwhite.

This is apparently the first effort for Mr. Hervey. I say apparently because I read the book, not because it says it in the acknowledgements. The description of the low country area of Charleston, Beaufort, Savannah and Hilton Head are pretty good and give you a sense of the area. But.....the main character, Hall McCormick, is like the Laurel & Hardy of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. He runs his boat aground more times in 6 days than I did in the 6 years I lived on Wadmalaw Island, SC. He gets his 6'2" self beaten up a couple of times and is constantly forgetting basic items than any boater knows about. It's really hard to imagine getting any type of help from this guy, let alone emergency on-the-water help. It really is a poor character choice.
The story is ok, albeit predictable. This is an amateur effort and should not have made it as far as .

Also predictable was that those horrible developers were the bad guys and the constant lamenting of how the area "used to be" and all the environmental lecturing, got very old, very fast.
Nope, sorry, it's not worth your time and I'm sure happy I didn't pay anything for it. Don't bother....
